Do you want to look younger than you are? If so then it’s important to learn how to slow down aging process. There are some factors of aging we can’t control, including our genes and chronological (birthdate-based age). We can’t really stop or reverse the aging process since we technically age every second of the day. However, the good news is we can slow down aging process. This can make our “biological” age younger than our chronological age. It gets better! You can even do that without expensive surgeries or medications. It’s really about getting back to basics.

Fun Fact: The world’s oldest verified human was a Frenchwoman who lived to be 122 years old.

Today people are spending tons of money to look, feel, and be healthy. In 2018 the world spent over $50 billion on anti-aging. If you want to save some money then remember the basic rule that “prevention is better than cure.” It’s all about trying to prevent diseases from forming and controlling the ones we have. In many cases, we can achieve those goals by spending little or no money. The key is to know what to do and not to do.

What Exactly Is Anti-Aging?

This is actually a more basic process than it might seem. It’s basically staying healthy so you live longer. It’s all about taking steps to slow down/reverse the various causes of aging. The key is to get to it as soon as possible. It’s like maintaining a machine. You can conduct repairs as needed but if you neglect the machine long enough it will be tougher to fix over time.

It might be surprising how much debate there is about exactly what anti-aging is all about. The reason is it can actually have several definitions and it really depends on who you ask. In a sense, there’s no “right” or “wrong” explanation. However, what’s important is to know how you’re approaching the topic when you talk about it.

If you talk to a doctor or businessman they’ll probably talk about the detection, treatment, and prevention of various diseases that are age-related. There are different approaches that the medical world is promoting to help treat such diseases. They include approaches like reducing calories/carbs.

One of the caveats is this aspect of anti-aging is also big business. The USA spent over $3.6 trillion on healthcare last year. While much of these costs were needed for expenses like prescription drugs and medical procedures, some health experts argue that public health should focus more on prevention rather than care.

Meanwhile, if you talk to a scientist, they’ll explain anti-aging as the process of slowing down or even reversing the normal process of aging. In recent years scientists have discovered some breakthroughs that could provide big results in the future. This is about different areas like diet and exercise. More research is needed. However, scientists continue to learn more about some of the root causes of aging. This even includes caps on the ends of DNA molecules that could be the key to protecting our body’s cells from getting damaged.

How to Slow Down Aging Process

1. Try to be stress-free

It’s tough but it’s a good anti-aging goal to have. There are many steps you can take including yoga, meditation, sports, hobbies, travel, 1nd even breathing exercises. Studies show that stress can cause issues like sagging skin, hair loss, and tooth decay.

2. Catch enough Z’s

If you want better health like glowing skin and bag-free eyes then make sure you’re getting 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night. This can help with different areas like preventing collagen breakdown. On the other hand, if you don’t get enough shut-eye at night it can cause signs of aging like dull/sagging skin, and eye bags. Most nights should be a full night’s sleep for optimum health.

3. Consider suburban/rural home

Studies show that simply living in a big city can speed up the aging process. That’s due to factors like fewer trees, less grass, and more pollution from vehicles and factories. There are situations where it’s not practical to live outside a big city. However, in terms of slowing down aging, it’s best to avoid the city slicker life.

4. Wear sunscreen

When you have “sun spots” they’re actually a reaction from your skin to protect itself from UV rays. Make sure to wear sunscreen with 30+ SPF. This will help to prevent liver spots and reduce UV-caused skin damage including fine lines and wrinkles. You should also take other steps like wearing sunglasses (with UV protection) and wide-brimmed hats/caps.

5. Don’t blame your genes

It turns out that the biggest factors related to the aging process and general health aren’t related to genes. This doesn’t mean they don’t play a role. However, it turns out lifestyle changes related to diet, exercise, stress, sleep, etc. play a much bigger role. If you don’t live a healthy lifestyle you can’t really blame the genes your parents gave you.

Top Causes of Premature Aging

1. Sun/Cold

Long-term exposure to sunlight or cold weather can speed up the aging process. It’s recommended that you limit exposure to UVA/UVB rays, and avoid ice-cold environments as much as possible. These factors are greatly based on the climate where you live so if you’re more prone to skin damage you should consider a region that’s more anti-aging.

2. Diet/Exercise

There’s no question that a healthy diet and regular exercise can help fight the signs of aging. Make sure to eat a well-balanced diet and exercise most days of the week. You don’t have to do a triathlon every morning but sitting all day can cause a world of trouble in terms of health.

3. Drinking/Smoking

Health experts explain that there’s more leeway for drinking than smoking. It’s always recommended that you quit smoking ASAP. That’s true whether you’re smoking cigarettes, puffing cigars, or vaping. In fact, while vaping doesn’t involve nicotine it’s not really “healthier” versus other types of smoking.

Drinking is more of a grey area. Studies show that drinking one glass of wine or one can of beer per day provides various health benefits. There seem to be some health benefits of occasional shots of gin, whiskey, brandy, rum, tequila, etc. However, the key to all of this is moderation. It’s also about your choices since red wine is 100% healthier than wine coolers.

4. Attitude/Outlook

It might be surprising how much of a factor one’s general outlook is on how fast they age. William Shakespeare once wrote that how we view something makes it good or bad. In other words, it’s really about how you view situations, people, the environment, and so on. You’ve probably noticed that people who smile more tend to look younger. That’s actually a thing and it’s one method for how to slow down the aging process.
