The Function of Seminal Vesicle: An Overview

The seminal vesicle is a pair of glands near the prostate gland. The function of seminal vesicle includes the body function of adding much of the fluid to sperm in order to make semen.

You’ve probably heard of prostate cancer and enlarged prostate. However, it might be unclear about what the gland is all about including the function of the seminal vesicle. This is a pair of glands that are located near the prostate gland. It’s important to know the function of these glands. The prostate itself is related to the male reproductive system so it’s helpful to have a basic knowledge about how it works. You can also get a prostate exam including DRE and others that can test for these conditions. It’s important to get examined regularly to find out whether or not you have either of these conditions.

The seminal vesicle is different from the prostate but has a similar function. It’s also near the prostate so it can be affected if cancer cells spread from the prostate gland to other body parts. This is why it’s critical to get a prostate exam either at the doctor’s office or at home via a self-exam. This will provide you with important information about whether or not you have an enlarged prostate. The condition known as BPH is related to a non-cancerous condition although prostate cancer can also cause the prostate to become larger than normal.

What Exactly Is Prostate?

Let’s start with the gland near the seminal vesicle that can become enlarged or cancerous. This is an important gland to know about. In fact, prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer among men.

The prostate is a small gland that’s one of the different parts of the male reproductive system. The normal size/shape is like a walnut. It’s located under the bladder. The function is to make fluid for the sperm that protects them and the genes they contain.

The prostate is involved in the release of sperm from the penis. The process involves millions of sperm that move from the testes to something called “seminal vesicles.” This pair of glands are connected to the prostate and adds more fluid before it is released from the body.

Another important area involved in the process is called the ejaculatory duct. During the process the prostate first contracts. This closes the opening that exists between the bladder/urethra. The semen is then released from the body. This process explains why the penis can’t release urine and semen at the same time.

The fluid that the prostate makes consists of around 30% of the total in semen. The rest is produced by seminal vesicles. This fluid is important because it protects the sperm. It keeps them alive and allows them to move easier. There are also many nutrients like enzymes, citric acid, and zinc.

One important kind of enzyme is something called PSA. After the body releases semen, PSA becomes thicker and makes the semen waterier. This makes it easier to move easier. This increases the chance a woman’s egg will get fertilized.

The fluid is a little acidic. However, the other parts of semen make it more alkaline than acidic. This helps to protect the sperm from getting damaged.

What’s The Function of Seminal Vesicle?

This is a pair of small tube-shaped glands. They’re located in the body over the prostate and also behind the man’s bladder. There’s one on the left and right side. The glands are about an average of 2 inches long.

The main job of seminal vesicles is making a fluid. It blends with the person’s sperm and makes a big percentage of the semen. The fluid is high-sugar since the main goal is to provide nutrients to the sperm.

The fluid is also sticky so the semen has a better chance at fertilizing a woman’s egg. More specifically it then stays in the vagina longer, which will increase the chance of pregnancy.

One key issue in terms of prostate cancer is sometimes the cancer cells spread to other parts of the body. That can include seminal vesicle. If that happens then they can become cancerous. This is one reason why it’s important to get a prostate exam to find out if you have an enlarged prostate.

There are different kinds of test although the most common one is called DRE. This is usually conducted by a doctor although a person can also do a self-exam. This helps to check the prostate’s size. If it’s larger than normal then it could be a sign of an enlarged prostate or prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is a more serious condition since it involves cancer cells. However, an enlarged prostate is also a health condition that should be monitored. It’s more common among men who are 50+ and about 90% of men in their 70s/80s develop this condition.

There are various causes of enlarged prostate also known as BPH. Another blood test can be ordered by a doctor to check your body’s PSA levels. If there are lower PSA levels this can be a sign of health issues that should be treated ASAP so they don’t become more serious.
